Hope & Bravery: Shostakovich & Tomasi

American conductor Jonathon Heyward leads the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in two powerful works shaped by the 1940s. Shostakovich's Symphony No.7, written during the Siege of Leningrad, became a symbol of hope and bravery amid war and famine. Henri Tomasi's expressive 1949 Saxophone Concerto is performed by classical saxophonist Steven Banks in his MSO debut, showcasing an instrument rarely heard as an orchestral soloist. The program is designed for classical audiences and newcomers interested in dramatic music, history and an unusual concerto spotlight.
