Italian Cinema Forum Workshop 4: The Godfather

Explore one of cinema’s most influential depictions of Italian identity at Italian Cinema Forum Workshop 4: The Godfather. This free, discussion-based workshop examines how Italian and non-Italian filmmakers have represented Italians in the diaspora, with a focus on Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film The Godfather and its enduring, often controversial, portrayal of italianità. Selected clips from the film will be screened as prompts for a guided group discussion. Participants are encouraged to watch the full film before attending so they can take part in a richer conversation about its themes, characters and cultural legacy. The session is convened by Dr Mark Nicholls, a Senior Lecturer in Cinema Studies at the University of Melbourne, where he has taught film since 1993. His experience also includes film journalism for ABC Radio and The Age, alongside more than 20 stage credits as a playwright, performer, producer and director. The workshop is suited to adult film lovers, students, educators and anyone interested in Italian culture, migration, representation and screen history. It takes place at Museo Italiano, 199 Faraday Street, Carlton, on Tuesday 28 July 2026 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Entry is free, but online booking is required.
