Jaime Conducts Mahler 6 pairs a monumental Romantic symphony with a new Australian work in a powerful Melbourne Symphony Orchestra program led by Chief Conductor Jaime Martín. The concert opens with the world premiere of Freshwater Saltwater by James Henry, the MSO’s Cybec First Nations Composer in Residence. Commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the new work brings the program into the 21st century before Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 delivers its dramatic exploration of fate and existential angst. The symphony moves between military marches, pastoral alpine scenes and the lyrical “Alma” theme, building to the famous moment when a percussionist raises and brings down Mahler’s massive hammer. Performances take place at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne, 100 St Kilda Road, Southbank, at 7:30pm on Thursday 13 August and Saturday 15 August 2026. Each performance runs for approximately 1 hour 40 minutes with no interval. Free pre-concert talks begin at 6:45pm in the Hamer Hall Stalls Foyer on both dates. Tickets start from $20 for children and people under 18. Mob Tix are $25, concession tickets range from $70 to $134 and standard tickets range from $75 to $139; an $8 transaction fee applies per order.
