PRESENCE is a free audio-visual installation by Australian artist Robin Fox, presented as part of the City of Melbourne’s Now or Never festival. Inside Melbourne Town Hall, lasers synchronise with sound in real time, forming geometric planes and immersive three-dimensional environments that continually dissolve and reform. The work moves from microscopic sonic textures to powerful waves of light and sound, creating an intense study of attention, space and the experience of being present.
The installation runs from Friday 21 August to Thursday 27 August 2026 at Melbourne Town Hall, 90–130 Swanston Street, Melbourne. Opening hours are 5pm–10pm on Friday 21 August, then 12pm–10pm daily from Saturday 22 August through Thursday 27 August. Entry is free and no booking is required. Visitors can attend during the advertised opening hours; check the official event page before travelling for any program updates.
Accessibility features reported by the organiser include mobility access, accessible toilets, acceptance of Companion Cards and quiet spaces. Because the work uses synchronised lasers, intense light and amplified sound, visitors with visual, auditory or sensory sensitivities should review the event information and contact the organiser if they need specific accommodations.
PRESENCE forms part of Now or Never, the City of Melbourne’s 12-day festival of art, ideas, sound and technology. Festival enquiries can be directed to nowornever@melbourne.vic.gov.au or 03 9658 9658.
