You Have a New Memory

You Have a New Memory is a free State Library Victoria exhibition exploring how and why people remember, and how memories are created, preserved and shared. Drawing on the Library’s collection of more than 4.5 million items, it brings intimate personal histories together with Victoria’s wider collective memory. A cinematic slideshow and objects on display reveal extraordinary and lesser-known memories selected from 170 years of collecting and stewardship. Visitors will encounter personal diaries, sacred cultural artefacts, everyday records and stories that may never be fully known. By placing ordinary lives alongside major historical moments, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on their own memories and the ways communities build shared histories. The exhibition runs from Friday 7 August 2026 to Sunday 27 June 2027 at State Library Victoria, 328 Swanston Street, Melbourne. It is open daily from 10am to 6pm.
